Hey there!
Wow, I am finally back with a new post. I am so sorry I have neglected writing blog posts in the past weeks but I’ve been busy working and I have actually also been enjoying my summer holiday on the days I wasn’t working. This might be a lame excuse but sometimes you just gotta chill and spend time with friends. Sometimes you just need a few days off to relax and wind down. And sometimes the weather happens to be just beautiful and all you really want to do is sit in the sun, swim in the lake and chat with friends. On those days I usually didn’t get home till late because I usually ended up staying at the lake way longer than expected and I either ended up eating in the city or my dinners were super simple and definitely not worth taking a picture of nor writing a recipe on. However, one day I promised my sister and my mum to have a little veggie barbecue so I stood in the kitchen all afternoon and prepared a few super delicious dishes. One of them happened to be a homemade tomato sauce aka ketchup or whatever you’d like to call it. I am talking about the red stuff you usually dip your chips in in case you haven’t got that yet.
My recipe obviously tastes nothing like the real deal cause for real, if you want something that tastes like Heinz Tomato Ketchup you probably also need to buy Heinz Tomato Ketchup. However, my creation is a super delicious, probably much healthier alternative and I can only recommend you to try it out. So let’s get cooking!
- 4 Tomatoes
- 10 dates
- 1 onion
- 1 clove of garlic
- 1 dash of cinnamon
- 1 dash of ground cloves
- ¼ cup water (60ml)
- 1tsp balsamic vinegar
- 1tsp salt
- 1.5tsp cornstarch
- coconut oil
- Finely chop up dates, tomatoes, the onion and garlic.
- Heat up about one teaspoon of coconut oil in a pan and then add the onion and garlic, fry until the onion has gone transluscent. Then add the tomatoes, dates, ground cloves, cinnamon, water, balsamic and the salt. Let the mixture come to a bubble, cover it with a lid and turn the heat to the lowest setting. Let it cook for 40 minutes.
- After 40 minutes add the mixture into your blender and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture back into your pan and mix the cornstacrh with about 1 tablespoon of cold water. Add the cornstarch mixture into your Date Tomato Sauce and let it come to a bubble. Then pour the tomato date sauce into a air thigh jar. You can store this in your fridge up to approximately one week.
Enjoy the barbecue season and let’s keep our fingers crossed for the weather to be sunny again soon.

YUM! Tomato sauce is one of my favorite savory sauces ever! I never knew you could use dates to sweeten it!

I know it’s so easy to replace sugar by using dates and it actually tastes soooo much better homemade!!
