Hey there!
Let me tell you about my amazing dining experience I had at Boucherie AuGust last Saturday night. Yes Boucherie. Right now you are probably already thinking, wait a second, isn’t Fanny that food blogger who doesn’t eat meat? Why the heck is she dining at a Boucherie ( for all you non- French speakers , boucherie means butchery)? Well, I can completely understand if you are confused, I would be too. Of course I did not end up eating meat, because well I just don’t eat meat, however I thought It would be interesting to get a non-meat eaters perspective on a restaurant that mainly serves meat, that in fact is famous for its selection of local meat specialities.
Local.ch and Carrie and Harry, the two bloggers behind harrysding organised a dinner for a couple of bloggers to check out Boucherie AuGust, the winner of the Besto of Swiss Gastro Award 2015 in the categories “Trend” and “Master”. Prior to our dinner , I of course had a look at the menu although I was aware that we were going to be served a special menu.
I must admit I was slightly disappointed to see that the only meat-less options were indeed side dishes. Nevertheless, I completely understand that a restaurant that calls itself Boucherie is not going to serve veggie dishes and I’d say it is also very unlikely that a vegetarian or vegan would chose such a restaurant to dine at. However, I do think that any restaurant should at least have one vegetarian option, especially nowadays as following a meat-less diet has become so popular over the past years.
Anyways, I’ll continue with the foodie talk later on and I will start right at the beginning of our night. We actually all met up at Max chocolatier for a few chocolates, some drinks and a very interesting and helpful post about SEO. After having eaten way too much chocolate we then walked over to the Rennweg, where Boucherie August is located.
As we arrived at the Widder Hotel of which Boucherie AuGust is part of, we were already awaited by Rene, Widder’s marketing manager, who then gave us a little tour of the hotel. I must admit those rooms are pretty impressive. I was especially taken by the fact that one could actually see the age of the building even though the rooms were furnished in a very modern way. However, my favourite part of the tour was definitely the spectacular view from the rooftop terrace which is actually part of the penthouse suite and usually only accessible for anyone who happens to stay up there. That view, impressive, very impressive!
After our tour we returned to Boucherie AuGust. I was actually quite blown away by the restaurant’s interior. I loved the black and white, which was complemented perfectly with the most colourful plates. I also enjoyed the fact that the chefs were actually preparing part of our food right behind the counter next to the entry of the restaurant.
So let’s start the real talk, I mean why do we go to a restaurant? We want to eat, we want to enjoy, we want to be spoilt.
Food:
The first course arrived straight after we all took our seats. I really enjoyed that the food was served up on little colourful serving plates and we could just serve ourselves however much we wanted. It gave the whole experience a casual and welcoming feel. Just like one were sitting at the dinner table at home, just without the cooking and obviously still a whole lot fancier.
The vegetarian/vegan first course consisted of:
- Lentil salad
- Carpaccio of red beet
- Anti Pasti
- Salad
even
I loved every single dish and I can’t complain at all, I think my favourite however was the beet root carpaccio. The meat-eaters really enjoyed their meals as well as far as I know, so I guess the meat must have been pretty good.
The first course was quickly followed by the second course, which consisted of:
- Couscous
- Ladyfingers
- Curry
- Potato salad
- Rice
- Green beans
Again, all delicious, I cannot complain!
For the meat eaters there was a variety of typically Swiss meat dishes on the table and yet again, everyone seemed to enjoy. So props to the kitchen team of Boucherie AuGust.Last but not least the meal was ended with a cream tartlet (Crème Schnitte/milles feuilles) or a scoop of mango sorbet and fruit salad. They hit the nail right on the head with that because I absolutely love mango sorbet. My fave ice cream ever, always has been, always will be!
After dinner we were also served a quince Schnaps, which was a tad to strong for me, however their espresso was eccelent!
Atmosphere:
I loved that Boucherie AuGust is somewhat of a mixture between fancy and casual dining. The interior as well as the eccelent service definitely display the high quality of this restaurant. However, it is still somewhat casual as one is able to plate up ones own plate which creates a very warming and welcoming atmospehere. I personally really like this kind of mixture.

All in all I cannot complain a single bit about my experience at Boucherie AuGust. The food was great, the atmosphere perfect and I can definitely recommend this place for anyone interested in real Swiss cuisine. I would definitely love to bring my meat-eating friends from abroad there to show them some real Swiss cuisine, however this is probably not going to happen as there isn’t really anything on the menu I could eat. That is why I suggest that it might not be such a bad idea to have at least one vegetarian dish on the menu, just in case a lonely vegetarian in a group of meat-eaters somehow ends up at Boucherie AuGust. But this is just my opinion and yes I know, I am a tad biased when it comes to this matter…
Thank you again to local.ch and Harry and Carrie for organising such a great event and to all the other bloggers who made this event such a fun experience.
The bloggers present were: Morena, Dominick, Laura, Glenn and of course Harry and Carrie.
Have a wonderful week people!
Bisous
