Sitting at the airport again yet this time not absolutely exhausted just a tad bored since I’ve still got an hour to kill until I can board my plane to Dubai. This post will actually be a little different to my usual recipe post. I just want to share some thoughts about my absolutely wonderful yet short two-week trip to Australia.
Something I’ve already noticed when I studied in Australia two years ago was the enormous amount of great coffee shops. Even in the remotest country town you’ll most definitely come across some kind of nice coffee shop with great coffee and a creative and delicious lunch menu. Some of them are literally situated in the middle of nowhere with no other buildings around. I’ve done a few drives from Dubbo, which is situated in western NSW, to Sydney or Newcastle and yet even when it looked like there was nothing else around than Wallabies and Wombats somehow suddenly a cute coffee shop appeared next to the road.
If Switzerland had just half the amount of great coffee shops we’d be totally covered for places to go for breakfast lunch or afternoon tea. Yet somehow there are just only a handful of those and most times they’re so terribly crowded that you probably won’t find a seat unless you pre-booked a table days in advance. That doesn’t happen in Australia though. I only spent time in Dubbo and Sydney during the last two weeks but still I’ve been to a few amazing coffee shops and not once did I pre-book a table and not once was I disappointed by the coffee nor the food or the service.
On this note I want to share the places I went to in Sydney. I would obviously also share the coffee shops I like in Dubbo yet I doubt that any of you will ever end up in that rural country town with nothing else than a Zoo to look at.
During the two three days I spent in Sydney I was staying in Bondi where I rented a room via Airbnb. It was located about a ten-minute walk from the beach and it took me about 20 to 30 minutes to get into the city centre. Yet I was quite happy to explore the area I was staying in since I hadn’t seen much of Bondi when I came to Sydney the first time. I actually didn’t even see the harbour bridge or the opera house this time. Well it is impressive but I’ve seen it and trust me this wasn’t the last time for me being in Sydney so I guess I’ll see them again and even if not, who cares.
While exploring Bondi on Wednesday I got myself some breakfast at Bondi Wholefoods after going to a Yoga class at bodymindlife.
The weather was absolutely beautiful that day so I decided to get my brekkie as a takeaway and enjoy it at the beach. I ordered an amazing acai bowl topped with gluten free granola and fresh fruit and coconut water and walked down to the beach where I indulged into this delight while enjoying the lovely autumn sun.
On that same I also came across a great looking organic shop that also offered a selection of homemade salads, muffins and other treats yet I only bought two delicious medjool dates since I just had breakfast.
After walking around all day, spending too much money on clothes and other things and sitting at the beach I started to make my way back to my room when I came across another great coffee shop that had actually been recommended by my hosts. I was completely exhausted so I decided to stop for a cup of coffee.
When I ordered I realised that they also offered some delicious looking raw vegan treats so I also treated myself to one of those. This coffee shop was called the shop and winebar and is situated on the corner of Curlewis street and Gleanyr Road in Bondi. The little treats were made by wellnessbytess and the one I tried was absolutely delicious!
The next day I met up with a friend in the city and we had a look at Sydney Uni and wandered around Surry Hills another area with a humongous selection of coffee shop. We ended up having lunch at a little place called oorganic produce on Crown Street. We both ordered avocado on sourdough and freshly squeezed juice. I went with beetroot and carrot, which might seem strange to some of you yet I absolutely adore this combination. Besides tons of coffee shops avocado on toast is another Aussie classic I got to love even more during the last two weeks. Those aussie avos are just so much better than the ones we get at home, no wonder they dedicated a whole website to this green delight (www.avocado.org.au).
You know what I might actually include a little recipe tip. Have you ever tried vegemite? If yes you probably thought it was disgusting unless you’re Australian, then you probably love it. I used to be exactly like all those other non-Aussies. I hated Vegemite. Yuck!
But have you ever tried avo and vegemite on toast? If not try it if you get the chance, it is delicious!! Yummo!
So here’s the recipe
¼ avocado
1 slice of bread
a tiny little bit of vegemite
- Toast your bread
- Spread a thin layer of vegemite on your toast
- Enjoy!
Anyway wasn’t that a helpful recipe? I’m sure you would have never ever thought of that yourself…
Btw have you ever seen avocado on toast on any menu in Switzerland? Well I haven’t and you know what, in Australia this is like the go to breakfast which can basically be found on any breakfast menu.
I miss Aussie already. I am now back home by the way, anyways let’s look at the bright side; I can finally create some new recipes!
Well that’s it for today.
