Hey there!
Watch out people a new vegan restaurant/ take-away has just opened up in the middle of Zurich. Açai bowls, coconut yoghurt, beautiful salads, sandwiches and not to be forgotten smoothies and a selection of freshly squeezed juices, that is Roots in a nutshell Just what Zurich was missing, a take-away to cater for all us superfood junkies and smoothie lovers out there and the fact that everything they serve is vegan is even a bigger plus .
If you have been reading my posts for a while you might be aware of my slight obsession with smoothie bowls or in particular Açai bowls. So when I heard that Roots would be serving those I got even more excited about the opening of this place. I mean nothing can beat a restaurant that serves Açai bowls. Am I right?
I have been in love with those superfood breakfast bowls for the past months. Yet up until my trip to Downunder this spring I didn’t know how big of a difference it would make if you actually used fresh Açai and not just the powdered version.
Anyways to try out the new place I had heard so much about some Swiss foodies and I decided that it was the perfect place for another meet-up. We met up on one of those super hot days we’ve been having so many of over the past weeks and had a beautiful lunch. When I had to place my order I was unfortunately under the impression that Açai bowls were only served in the mornings so I ended up ordering a delicious salad bowl with greens, grapefruit, figs, almonds, lots of herbs and a deliciously tangy dressing. The flavours were just wonderful and I loved that I can honestly say that I had never tasted anything like it before. It was just delicious!
We ended up having a little chat to one of the owners after our lunch in which we amongst other things found out that the Açai bowls are actually served all day long and they are indeed made with fresh Açai not the boring powdered stuff. As we were all so excited about this fact he even ended up shouting us one bowl to share for dessert. The Açai bowl was delicious, just like the ones I used to have in Australia this spring…
The prices at Roots are also pretty reasonable for Swiss standards (after coming back from Argentina two days prior to my visit everything seemed so expensive). The juices and smoothies range from around 7 to 12 francs depending on size and ingredients, breakfasts come at around 8 to 9 francs and salads, soups and sandwiches range from 8.50 up to 17 francs. There are always different sizes available which I appreciate as I personally tend to not be able to finish restaurant portions. I also love that they offer the option of either eating at roots itself or getting your food as take-away. The dining area is kept fairly simple and spreads this kind of modern urban vibe..
All in all I can only talk positively about my experience at Roots. The staff was super friendly and even let us enjoy a cake one of the girls brought along. I mean you wouldn’t usually bring dessert anyways but I thought it was so nice of them to not make a big fuss about it which, I am sure would have happened at lots of other places. Just another plus to the already great experience.
As you might have guessed I will definitely go back there super soon and I sure already know what I’ll be ordering…
Well, the Açai bowl of course! I mean it’s one of my favourite things to eat and since this one is made of actual Açai I just can’t say no. Plus it makes me think I am sitting on Bondi Beach where I had enjoyed my very first “real” Açai bowl.
- Prices: Very affordable
- Food: Delicious and healthy vegan creations
- Atmosphere and interior: very modern, comfortable, great vibe, nice people
- BUT: Roots is rather small and seating space is limited so I recommend to chose the take-away option if you are planning to go there in a larger group of people.
- Staff: Super helpful and friendly
- Location: Perfect! Roots is literally in the heart of Zurich within a two minute walk from Zürich Hauptbahnhof ( Zurich’s main station).

That sounds amazing, I wish we had something like this in the Netherlands. It’s so sad that there aren’t that many healthy/ vegan restaurants here. Hopefully more restaurants like Roots will come in the future! I hope that you get the chance to try a lot more different meals at Roots soon! Xx
